Blood

為了解決Amazon short link的問題,作者Gee, Maggie 這樣論述:

Who attacked Dad? When a corrupt, brutal dentist, Albert Ludd, is found battered and bloody after failing to attend a memorial party for his youngest son, suspicion falls on the dentist's other children. Especially on Dad's middle daughter, 37-year-old buxom bruiser Monica Ludd, who was heard 'utter

ing threats' against her absent father. How come her car is found outside Dad's house? Why did she buy a large axe? And yet, Monica's a deputy head teacher... Blood is a Gothic black comedy seen through the eyes of six-foot Monica, who cannot help speaking her secret thoughts aloud and who has been

banned by the principal of her school, from using social media. '"Parents are sensitive to abuse." "Neil, I would never abuse our parents." "Governors queried 'moron' and 'twat'." ' Set in an angry, anarchic, Brexit-ing Britain where terrorism has become routine, Blood also asks serious questions ab

out modern life: what can we do with the brutal men who bully women and the weak? Can we wait for a world of order and justice? If we hit back, can the circle of violence ever be broken? Kirkus Reviews (05/01/2019): What should Monica Ludd, the fearless sister to five other Ludd siblings, do when sh

e finds their horrible father beaten to a pulp? And what does the dysfunctional Ludd family's predicament tell us about Brexit Britain? "The Ludds. Artistes of awfulness" is how noted British novelist Gee (Virginia Woolf in Manhattan, 2014, etc.) introduces the bizarre family around which she builds

her tragicomedy of revenge. Monica, 38, 6-foot-1, "an amazon, strong, deep-chested, solid haunches," narrates the book, haunted by the fearsome childhood she endured. Her twin brothers, Boris and Angus, "two jut-jawed Herculeses," their wand-thin model sister, Fairy, and another sister, glamazon An

thea, lived in dread of their cruel father, Albert, whose pitilessness forced the last child, Fred, into the army; he was killed in Afghanistan. But for all her power, Monica is not quite as tough as she seems. Discovering Albert's bloody, smashed-up body after a party to celebrate Fred's life, she

flees, beginning a chain of farcical events that exposes both her resourcefulness and her vulnerability. The Ludds live in Thanet, a spit of land in southern England, "the end and beginning of Britain," and Gee's nonstop procession of grotesques, slapstick, and sideswipes at Brexit and domestic terr

orism attempts to point up connections between violence in personal relationships and other, larger scenarios. Lurid and breathless, driven by galumphing characters and some belly laughs, this furious tale of brutal times and remedies doesn't quite make that link, but the wild ride, underpinned by i

ts author's sharp perceptions, entertains quite a bit. A horror movie-esque last act sees the family coming together to defeat oppression and Monica transformed at last from lone warrior to larger-than-life local hero. Even if the novel can seem unsettled, she's irresistible. A vibrant parable of ab

use and survival, stronger on the family front than the national one. COPYRIGHT(2019) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. "Commanding" Wall Street Journal (07/16/2019) Publishers Weekly (05/20/2019): The family of teacher Monica Ludd, the 37-year-old narrator of this amusing, psychologically attune

d crime novel from British author Gee (The White Family), is headed by her father, Albert, a dentist in Thanet, Kent, who sexually abuses his patients and cheats the government. Albert has raised six children, torturing them verbally and physically. Monica is preparing to throw a party honoring her

younger brother, Fred, who was killed in Afghanistan. She plans a speech blaming Albert for Fred's death, because Albert bullied him into becoming a soldier. Her plans, however, go awry: Albert fails to come to the party, and Monica threatens in front of witnesses to kill him. The next morning, Moni

ca goes to his house, armed with an ax, only to find her father already dead, slaughtered in his bed. Gee poses the question: is Monica culpable because she wanted to commit the crime but failed to execute it, or did she actually do it? The reader goes back and forth, not knowing what to believe. On

e doesn't have to be a mystery fan to appreciate this beautifully crafted and provocative tale. (July) Copyright 2019 Publishers Weekly, LLC Used with permission. Shelf Awareness (07/09/2019): Maggie Gee's Blood could be called an unorthodox thriller, a black comedy or representative of any number o

f other genres. For many American readers, it will be an introduction to the acclaimed author of 15 books published in the U.K. The genre may be difficult to place, but it's easy to see Gee's strengths, particularly in her characters. The novel is told primarily from the perspective of Monica Ludd,

a gigantic, buxom woman from a family haunted by the abuse and cruelty meted out by their physically imposing father on his wife and children. When the father is attacked, Monica becomes the chief suspect. Blood's plot is not particularly twisty--despite the novel's short length, there are passages

where Monica meditates on her twisted childhood and a country thrown into turmoil by Brexit and terrorist attacks. What carries the book is Monica's perspective: equal parts rude, funny, fearful, literate and randy. Monica is an unusual but effective vehicle for a conversation about the legacy of ab

use and violence. The contradictory aspects of her character echo the difficulty of the topic. At one point, Monica reminds the reader that her father always "adored" her mother in the midst of relating the ways he tormented her: "Yes, I know, it's complicated; life's complicated, get over it." Inst

ead of twists and turns, Gee immerses the reader in dread. Her father's fate uncertain, Monica fears that he will return and continue his reign of terror. Blood asks whether a monster can be stopped without further monstrous violence. COPYRIGHT(2019) Shelf Awareness, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. "Gee has cr

Maggie Gee (Virginia Woolf in Manhattan, 2019) has published fifteen books to great acclaim, and her work has been translated into fourteen languages. One of Granta’s original ’Best Young British Novelists’ (1983, with William Boyd, Kazuo Ishiguro, Julian Barnes), she has been shortlisted for maj

Fear Versus Anxiety: How Emotions Drive Consumer Panic Buying Behavior Under Moderating Effects of Construal Level and COVID Denial

Thailand Take 2

為了解決Amazon short link的問題,作者Rees, Matt Owens 這樣論述:

Thailand Take 2 looks at Thais and Thailand in a unique way. It is not a politically correct travel guide written to promote tourism and showing only the rosy side of Thailand. It is called Take 2 because you will need to forget for a moment what you have read or heard about the country and take a f

resh look, a second take, of this amazing country. The book stresses how different the country is from the West and shows the importance of several concepts, not always immediately apparent: mai bhen rai, the apparent laid-back attitude of life that you see immediately you arrive, but which can some

times be deceptive and problematical; greng jai, a consideration for other people, not being pushy; and nam jai, an almost daily practice of giving and sharing within the family and community. You will quickly see, perhaps surprisingly given the apparent carefree lifestyle, that the class system is

very rigid in Thailand. Together with mai bhen rai, greng jai, and nam jai, it determines how Thais think and behave within society. Real characters are introduced in the book to show how Thailand's culture is so different from western concepts. Readers will meet bankers and bargirls, the young and

the old, the rich and the less well off. And get right into their lives. It describes a Thailand that is not always that transparent to the casual observer. It takes the reader away from the regular tourist spots and explores the real Thailand. Enjoy the usual tourist attractions, but don't miss the

opportunities to socialise with the Thais and understand their real culture at first hand. This book will help you do that. We start by looking at the rigid class system in the country. Through the words of the Thais themselves, you will see how strict rules of hierarchy influence everyday lives. Y

ou will get to grips with why their apparent laid-back life style and their constant smiling is such an essential characteristic in everything they do. We come across situations involving the eastern concept of face and how foreigners can best deal with it. Family feuds, weddings, funerals, communit

y activities - all are seen from a more intimate angle. Through the book's pages, you will maybe feel that you are personally present at some of the situations described, and part of the conversations taking place. Or, alternatively, that you are a "fly on the wall" looking at Thai life at close qua

rters. The bar scene and the Thai mafia are seen in a different light when the social and political reasons of corruption and cheating are explained. Readers will be able to compare their own observations with the scenarios and characters appearing in its pages, as we discuss how Thais see most fore

igners who visit or stay here. To link with the main themes of the book and to give perspective, a short 6000 word appendix is attached on Thailand's political journey over the last 775 years. Thailand Take 2 starts with some daily entries from A Thailand Diary, many of which will shock the reader a

nd show a side of Thailand not normally seen. Most importantly, it is a "no holds barred" expose of Thais and Thailand, presented through the words and actions of real Thais. Are you sometimes surprised when visiting a foreign country? Do you like discovering a side of the people’s lives that tour

ists rarely see? Matt Owens Rees has written extensively on Thais and Thailand. Thailand Take 2 describes the main characteristics and differences between Thais and Westerners. A Thailand Diary is a lighter read with more than 100 diary entries. You can take a virtual look inside the everyday lives

and experiences of the Thai people, and how they and foreigners interact in this amazing country. Through field research and discussions with Thais, either in normal conversation or in the lecture theatre, Matt Owens Rees presents a rich picture of the real Thailand: warts and all. Despite not being

similar in style, his books reflect on some of the observations in "Mai pen Rai Means Never Mind." ln his opinion, the best book written on Thais and Thailand. Penned by Carol Hollinger in 1965, its insights are still very revealing and up to date. Sadly, Hollinger passed away at 45 years old befor

e she could see her best selling book in print. Thailand Take 2 and A Thailand Diary are dedicated to her. Escape to Thailand is an account of an expat’s experiences and sometimes unease after moving to Thailand. We become a "fly on the wall’ during his early days and months here, and the reader is

invited to reflect on how he or she would have coped in similar circumstances. You can follow Matt Owens Rees at mattowensrees.wordpress.com, his twitter address is @mattowens355, and you can email him at mailto: [email protected] His Chiangmai, Thailand Facebook page is Matt Owens and his
